Q&A: NASCAR star Kyle Larson shares the dirt on his racing career

Kyle Larson has wheels on the asphalt, but his feet are solidly in the dirt.

A 25-year-old Californian on the verge of superstardom in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, Larson clings to his roots in short-track dirt racing, spinning and sliding midgets and sprint cars to the extent his contract with Chip Ganassi Racing will allow. And that allowance is 25 races per year, a number reached in discussions between the longtime car owner and the driver he brought up through developmental circles. Larson would like to see the number be higher; Ganassi appreciates his star driver’s love for racing beyond NASCAR but also wants to protect his asset.

The 2017 season allows no room for suggestions that Larson’s off-duty fun had negative impacts on his Cup progress. It was his best season of four in the nation’s top stock-car series: He won four times, amassed 20 top-10s and was considered a top challenger for his first Cup championship…
