HOMESTEAD, Fla. — Kyle Larson couldn’t stomach watching the final 194 laps of the Kansas Speedway race Sunday after his hopes of winning the race — and likely his championship hopes — ended early with a blown engine.

So he watched football while sitting in his motor home Sunday waiting for his 2017 championship fate to be sealed.

“I watched some football for a little bit,” Larson said Wednesday. “I’m not really a fan of any team, but I just didn’t really want to watch the race that much.”

Larson flipped back to the race to watch about the final half of the event, and it didn’t get much better for him. He nearly got enough help to advance, but Jimmie Johnson, who spun twice during the race, finished well enough to beat Larson by nine points for the eighth and final spot available in the semifinal round.
