Kyle Larson, who has won four races and run up front all season, is out of NASCAR’s playoffs for the round of eight.

Martin Truex Jr. has seven wins, including a come-from-behind victory in Sunday’s race at Kansas Speedway.

What if Truex is eliminated when the cut is made for the final four (the quartet of drivers who will decide the championship)?

What if Kyle Busch, who has four wins, is eliminated?

The deciding race could be a contest to crown the best of the also-rans.

And Jimmie Johnson — who is struggling through what is arguably his worst Cup Series season since he started racing at that level full time in 2002 — could still be there in the season finale next month at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

He could be gunning for a record eighth championship.
