Denny Hamlin talks Racing at Sonoma Raceway

Sonoma Raceway held their annual media luncheon in San Francisco today, with guests K&N Pro Series West driver Todd Gilliland, Fox Sports analyst Larry McReynolds and Joe Gibbs Racing driver and Daytona 500 champion Denny Hamlin.

Hamlin has won at superspeedways, intermediates and short tracks, but has yet to break through on the Cup schedule’s road courses. In fact, since 2006, Denny has raced in 10 Cup races at Sonoma, with an average finish of 22nd. He acknowledged that road-course racing isn’t his strength:

“As a driver, you want to win on every different type of racetrack that we race on. Even though this race is not tied to the championship, there’s a sense of pride when you come out here and you want to run well. I think I went six straight years with somebody wrecking me in Turn 11. When I talked to them, it was the same excuse. They were trying to block somebody behind them, looking in the mirror, and they flat ran overtop of me.”

Despite having already placed himself in the Chase with his season opening win at Daytona, Hamlin insists Sonoma Raceway is an important stop on the Cup schedule.

“This is a big event, we take a lot of pride in running really well out here in Sonoma. It’s a long way to come just to go through any motions and pack up on plane and go home. I get as frustrated here as anywhere when I don’t run well and I’m as proud, and have my chest out when I do run well. It’s a big race for us personally and for team members. It’d be a trophy I’d love to have.”
